Slovakia Winter Activities Attractions Packages

Slovakia literally lies in the heart of Europe, bordering Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, the Ukraine and Hungary. The country boasts nine national parks, and there is hardly a mountain not under natural protection. Slovakia is a primarily mountainous country and this, along with the midland climate, create great skiing conditions. Above all, the Tatras enjoy these ideal natural conditions, where winter sports developed in the local centres from the 19th century. Today, in addition to the famous ski centres in the Tatras and Fatras, there are also many centres in smaller mountains with good pistes, so that it’s possible to ski in nearly every Slovakian region. Winter sports are very popular in Slovakia and well-equipped centres attract not only the local residents, but also foreign visitors. In the country’s mountain ranges, 36 modern ski centres are available to ensure wonderful skiing conditions for everyone.

Where to go skiing in Slovakia?
The High Tatra Mountains are the main destination for winter sports in the Slovakian territory. The mountains cover at least two-thirds of Slovakia’s landscape and can therefore guarantee snowy winters as well as provide a variety of ski resorts ranging from small to medium-sized, making them suitable for every ski level. Along the southern edge of the High Tatras, you can find the ski centre hotspot, with the Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso resorts found along a valley with 30 km distance between each other.

The highest mountain of Low Tatras is situated on the other side of the High Tatras, which also belongs to the Carpathian Mountains. The Demänovská valley ski resort is a particularly interesting resort for skiers. The valley is also known for its ice caves, its 15 km long length, and is the main tourist centre on the northern side of the Low Tatras ridge. Here, you can also find the winter sports area Jasná – in the midst of the Low Tatra Mountains. Since the end of the 19th century, this ski resort has developed into one of the largest and most popular ski resorts in the country with 45 km of pistes. This ski resort extends itself over both sides of the mountain Chopok and is every bit as qualified as other ski areas when it comes to slope quality and modernity. From December to April, you can find the perfect slopes as well as challenging skiing trails for cross-country skiers at an altitude between 950 and 2,024 meters. Moreover, there are paradisical conditions for snowboarders in the snow park with a half pipe, rails and jumps. Even some off-piste areas with deep snow variations are accessible for freeride-lovers. The area is also often a venue for international competitions.
