    • Kalkan, Turkey

1. Take a trip to Patara beach either by taxi or a 20/30 minute dolmus ride. Its 12 miles of golden sands and is home to protected turtles. Or smaller but closer to home is Kalkan beach.

2. Swim in the sea from a beach club. These are decked areas or platforms cut into the rock from which you can swim. Some charge a fee for sun loungers and parasols. All have food and drink available. Mahal, Kalkan and Palm Beach clubs can be reached by a free water taxi from the harbour. Kalamar beach club is situated in Kalamar Bay and Yali beach club, our favourite is situated a short stroll from the harbour or can be walked to from the apartment via the Lykia Residence Hotel.

3. Go shopping in Kas. Kas is a 30 minute drive away from Kalkan along the stunning costal road. It is more bohemian than Kalkan and offers amongst its cobbled winding streets opportunities to buy clothes, jewellery, sandals and artwork.

4. Wade through the Xanthos River at Saklikent Gorge. The river has carved its self, deep into the rock creating Europe’s second longest gorge. With the support of an expert guide and a ropeway it is quite safe to enter the gorge if you don’t mind getting wet. On a hot day this can be extremely refreshing.

5. Visit an important historical site. Tlos is one of the most important historical sites of Lycia. You can walk right up to, and inside, the ancient tombs and fortifications and enjoy magnificent views across the surrounding countryside. Xanthos, the ancient Lycian capital was buried after an earthquake and is still being evacuated from Roman times. Here at this Unesco World Heritage site you can visit an amphitheatre, several monuments and the ruins of a large church. At Letoon, an important religious centre, you can see the remains of temples to Leto, Artemis and Apollo.

6. Hire a boat and have a lazy day at sea. You can charter a gulet from Kalkan harbour for the day and if you fancy a spot of romantic star gazing you might prefer a moonlight cruise. Your captain will make various stops for swimming and snorkelling and your on-board chef will prepare you lunch and afternoon tea. Personally I can’t think of a better way to relax whilst topping up that suntan.

7. Visit a sunken city. Take a glass bottom boat from Tersane Bay and see the sunken ruins of the city of Kekova, which was once part of the mainland and now due to a series of earthquakes is 6 metres under the sea.

8. See Kalkan from above. For those with no fear of heights try tandem paragliding over Kalkan bay starting from the Berzigan Mountain. This can be arranged via skyline paragliding Tel: 0090 532 733 6009. Please check your insurance covers you for this type of activity.

9. Have a massage or for the gentlemen in the family visit the barber for a shave, haircut and massage. Spas are available at: the Lykia Residence Hotel, the Asfiya Hotel and the Kalkan Regency Hotels with a hamam or Turkish bath available at the Hotel Pirat and the Atlantis Hotel.

10. Just relax in a harbour side restaurant, read a book, sip a cold beer, take in the view and watch the world go by. It doesn’t get much better.
